Interesting and unusual bird observations
Birdline New South Wales

Birdline NSW is a site for the reporting of rare or unusual birds outside their normal range, unusually high or low numbers, early or late arrivals or departures for migrant species and interesting behaviour or unusual habitat usage. We may also consider publishing unusually-plumaged birds (e.g. albinistic/leucistic/melanistic) if they are considered interesting or are uncommonly seen.

Birdline New South Wales is supported by Birding NSW, Birdlife Southern NSW and Cumberland Bird Observers Club and moderated by Alan Morris, Liam Murphy, Mick Roderick and Simon Blanchflower.

We support ethical birding .

Moderators' Note

Birders are encouraged to post lists to eBird Australia, where sightings are incorporated into the BirdLife Australia Atlas. To do this you need to register with eBird Australia then login. All Regent Honeyeater and Swift Parrot reports should be forwarded to Mick Roderick to assist in the recovery of these severely declining species: mick.roderick@birdlife.org.au. Note we will not be publishing reports of Accipiter raptors (Collared Sparrowhawk, Grey/Brown Goshawks) or Square-tailed Kites unless they are in unusual locations or are seen with unusual prey etc.

Thu 2Topknot Pigeon
Dunoon
A mega flock of >2000 Topknot Pigeons was seen this morning in the valley west of Dunoon township, Northern Rivers NSW. Remarkable sight. Topknot numbers have been increasing in the area over the past month or two, presumably due to fruiting Camphor Laurel (and hopefully native species as well). But I've never seen so many at once. The photo just gives an idea :-)

Fri 19Yellow-faced Honeyeater (migration)
Mill Stream Lookout (Botany)
A group of around 60 migrating Yellow-faced Honeyeaters was flurrying around between cover in the small vegetated strip between Botany Bay and Foreshore Road. Not much habitat there for them, but I suppose it's not a bad spot to hold up after an exposed flight over the Bay and the Airport.

At beach access c 1km s of surf lifesavers station.(Moderator's Note: Posting as a possible until it can be verified. MR).

Thu 18highlightKing Parrots
Loughnan Street, Lake Cargelligo
There have been reports of what I believed to be King Parrots in the Lake Cargelligo area since mid March. On the 18th of April I had a friend say that they believe they saw one across from her yard in a tree near a water trough. Approx one hour later I arrived and there were no birds in sight so I played callback using the Pizzey & Knight app. Two King Parrots flew in. One bird had a drink from the water trough and they left again but I was able to identify a female and the male with red head. (Moderator's Note: This is an interesting extension of range as it is only recently that King Parrots were recorded from Condobolin. In recent times, King Parrots have extended west from Dubbo to Nyngan as well, while Superb Parrots have extended their breeding range to include Orange and Bathurst. Climate Change effects? AKM) eBird checklist

White Tern, Brown Booby, Buller's Shearwater/Albatross
Offshore--Port Stephens pelagic
Great day out of Port Stephens today, with 17 species recorded outside of the heads (including an adult White-bellied Sea-eagle that aborted an attempt at taking a shearwater). Highlights were singles of White Tern, Brown Booby, Buller's Shearwater and Buller's Albatross. There was a good supporting cast of sea monsters, with four huge Mobula Rays (possibly Chilean Devil Rays) seen half way out, a Minke Whale and one of the most endearing pods of Pantropical Spotted Dolphins we've ever had, being ~65-strong and playing/surfing wind waves etc before doing a synchronised departure porpoising as they left, which really felt a lot like a parting gesture.

Fri 12highlightSwift Parrot
Wyee central coast nsw
6 Swift Parrots around 0800 hrs in gums, possibly Swamp Mahogany and Spotted Gum, sorry I don't know my trees. (Moderator's Note: Mid April is a usual time for Swift Parrots to return to NSW providing that the Box Woodland sites in Victoria are not heavily in blossom and on such occasions, the Parrots then don't bother to cross the Border! AKM)

Sat 6Eastern Osprey
Gore Cove, Greenwich
Interesting sight of an Osprey settling on a submerged sandbank in the middle of the cove, and drinking at length from the muddy brown water, presumably now only marginally brackish, if at all, after the recent deluge. A pair were cruising over the cove on the 4th, before the heavy rains, but I didn't expect to see one return when fishing conditions were not exactly ideal!
Ted Nixon 7/4 #270381
